How could I use rope as a symbol in my novel?

what about something like "i'll give you all of the rope you need, but don't hang yourself with it" (old saying) someone- like a politician- could have all of the freedom to do whatever he/she wanted, in campaigning etc. but one thing, or hidden secret could ruin them.
