Do religious people think that by believing something untrue, they become better people?

I mean, it can’t be easy believing in some weird nonsense made up ages ago by illiterate desert dwellers. It must take a lot of willpower to overcome natural skepticism. Surely people will only put in this much effort if they have something to gain in this present life…
