In mainstream Judaism, how is the Garden of Eden and the story of "the expulsion from Paradise" interpreted.?

I have a muddled remembrance that's it's symbolic of the entry into adult life and responsibility. Adam and Eve are without moral knowledge, do no work and have no ual relations. This is childhood. They become adult (ie learn to distinguish evil and good) and stand in a new relation to each other and to the world - ie become adults. Am I on the right track here? Thanks. (PS I know the orthodox Christian reading - so no need to explain that to me!)
